Things to do near Deal

Don’t be deceived by Deal’s small size, this is a seaside town with plenty of activities and amenities. Sporting an abundant maritime history, Deal celebrates its naval history and military roots. Deal Maritime and Local History Museum has reopened recently with brand new exhibitions for 2021 and has a vast collection of boats from throughout history to view. Being just a few miles from Dover, Deal has always been of strategic significance to England’s defences from foreign invasion, and you can learn all about this by visiting Deal Castle, and Walmer Castle and Gardens, both built as artillery fortresses during the Tudor era. Sandown Castle was also built by Henry VIII for the same reasons but has unfortunately been victim of coastal erosion over the years. However, the ruins of the castle can still be visited, and the site has been converted into a three-tiered garden that is a must-see attraction.

If history isn’t your thing, or you want to explore beyond castles, Deal also has a very vibrant arts scene. The town is home to many art galleries and local artists. Deal Music and Arts Festival is an annual event which usually runs throughout the months of June and July, and hosts a range of folk, comedy and musical acts, as well as world-class dance performances.

Deal won the Daily Telegraph High Street of the Year Award in 2017, and upon visiting, it is clear to see why. Deal high street is home to a plethora of independent businesses and colourful buildings. After you have wandered through the shops, you might want to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink to rest your feet, and Deal has so much to offer you. Grab a gluten-free sweet treat at Kerry’s Bakehouse and Eatery, tuck into some fresh seafood at Dunkerley’s Restaurant and Hotel, or treat yourself to Michelin guide approved cuisine at Frog and Spot.

It takes 20 minutes to walk the entire length of Deal’s promenade, and the town is perfectly placed in between the nearby coastal towns of Sandwich and Walmer. The iconic white cliffs of Dover are only a 15-minute bus ride away, and historic Canterbury is accessible by car, bus, and train.
