Love art? Then come and stay in Kent and Sussex where there are so many interesting galleries to visit. I went to the award-winning Jerwood Gallery in Hastings over the Christmas holidays, which has a stunning location on the beachfront right in the heart of the historic Old Town with its eclectic range of shops, galleries and cafes. Having strolled around the gallery with my family (including one budding A Level art student!), we enjoyed a lovely lunch in the café upstairs which has panoramic views of the sea and fishing fleet, not to mention the iconic fisherman’s huts where fresh fish can still be bought. The gallery is home to the Jerwood Collection of 20th and 21st century art and a varied temporary exhibition programme showcasing the best of modern contemporary British art. The gallery will re-open this year on 30th January with an exhibition of John Bratby’s work entitled “Everything but the Kitchen sink, including the Kitchen sink”. John Bratby was a prolific painter and writer on the British art scene during the Fifties and Sixties and the display will include privately-owned works donated to the gallery for this exhibition.
