Delicious Food at The Poet, Matfield

Last week, we found ourselves child free for the night so we thought we would take the opportunity to try out somewhere new for dinner. The Poet has been recommended to us on a few occasions so we thought we would give it a go…and we were so glad we did! It was a freezing night so we enjoyed our pre-dinner gin and tonic on a comfortable sofa next to the woodburning stove. Ordering a gin and tonic is not a decision to be taken lightly at the Poet – they stock a wide variety of craft gins so you are spoilt for choice! We moved to our table in the nicely rustic restaurant area. We both had the wild mushroom risotto to start followed by beef rump for my husband and duck for me. The flavour of all the dishes was absolutely fantastic. The risotto was rich and warming with large succulent pieces of mushroom and a depth of flavour you wouldn’t think possible for a mushroom risotto! Both our mains were beautifully cooked and again, seasoned to perfection. Hard to resist desserts of lemon posset with strawberry ice cream and a pistachio and white chocolate panna cotta with raspberry sorbet, rounded off the meal beautifully. The head chef is a co-owner of the business and was a contestant on Masterchef, so I think the high standard is set to continue! Why not come and try it for yourselves? Stay in one of our lovely cottages in the area and treat yourself to dinner!
