Tunbridge Wells is renowned for its Georgian and Victorian architecture, and there is no better place to take it all in than the Pantiles. The Pantiles are the streets that define Tunbridge Wells, and nowadays this array of period buildings host boutique shops and many bars, restaurants and cafes.

The Pantiles are also home to Chalybeate Spring, a natural spring that was discovered by a travelling nobleman, Dudley North, in 1606. The spring is the reason that Tunbridge Wells town was founded and is still open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all visitors, but locals advise you to check whether water is being served before you arrive. You can discover even more about the history of Tunbridge Wells at Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery, which has a permanent exhibition of local history and archaeological finds.

History and nature meet on the Spa Valley Railway. The train journey spans five miles, from Eridge to Tunbridge Wells and takes you through the gorgeous High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You can learn all about the railway’s history at Tunbridge Wells West Station, which has a small museum. Afterward, continue your day by enjoying a spot of lunch in the Station’s cafe, which is in a restored buffet car. Take in more scenery in Dunorlan Park, an impressive 78 acres of landscaped gardens designed in the 1860s by Robert Marnock. The park has lots to see and do, including taking a trip on the boating lake via pedalo or rowboat.

Tunbridge Wells is also in the heart of the Kent countryside and is just a short drive from the border of East Sussex, where you will discover more lovely parks, including Ashdown Forest, home of Winnie the Pooh! The coast is also reachable, the closest beach being Bexhill on Sea, but all of Kent’s most popular seaside destinations are accessible by car or train, including Hastings, Camber Sands and Whitstable.
